The Winter Olympics are so chock full of gorgeous images that, starting Friday, we're making a series out of it.
Our first Photo of the Day captures fireworks at the opening ceremony in Sochi from afar. Photographer Streeter Lecka took this shot of fireworks lighting up the Russian night sky from the hills overlooking the Olympic Park.

The opening ceremony kicked off at 8 p.m. Sochi time (11 a.m. ET) Friday. Eighty-eight national delegations marched in front of thousands. The U.S. Olympians wore Ralph Lauren-designed outfits. And Jamaica's six-man bobsled team was one of the smallest delegations, but appeared very happy to be in attendance.
NBC begins its coverage of the Winter Olympics at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

In 2012, LifeWings, a patient safety consulting firm, began an extensive program with Easter Maine Medical Center(EMMC). LifeWings Safety Coach, Alan Price, a U.S. Air Force Command pilot and retired Lt. Colonel, worked with EMMC and says, " I am passionate about the processes we developed in the airline industry, and now have adapted to the healthcare environment. The process is not complicated but it is not easy. Commitment is the key word, and if one is committed, amazing things are possible for both the patient, and staff."
Hospital leaders at EMMC chose the Operating Room as the first department to begin the LifeWings process. Beginning in the summer of 2012, a 3-day Leadership Development Institute (LDI) introduced over 50 EMMC senior staff and OR leaders to the LifeWings process. Team Skills Workshop (TSW) that equip teams with skills to detect, trap, and correct potential errors followed during which over 750 OR staff and leadership participated.
In October, the first Hardwired Safety Tools (HST) workshop that provide the tools to ensure effective team behaviors and create permanent change was held for the Main OR. To date, there have been six of these workshops for OR related departments. (Cath Lab, Endo, Eye Center, Labor and Delivery, and PACU.) Mr. Price adds " The TSW classes are highly informative, but the HST workshops are fundamentally transformative. Here, the real work of process change occurs where cultural and behavioral improvements benefit both the staff and the patient."
At EMMC, these Hardwire Safety Tool Workshops(HST) workshops have developed over 30 new tools presently implemented in the OR and related departments. It is hard to overstate how significant their impact has been. Here is a sample of just a few of these tools:
- OR - New Pre-Op briefing and hand-off procedures have been developed, timeouts have been revised, a debriefing process is being implemented, and PACU hand-offs and OR holds have been
- Cath Lab/EP/IR - implemented a daily “Huddle”; debriefings are being used; and up-line processes such as transport issues are being addressed.
- Endo - redesigned one of the ORs for improved patient safety; revamped and redesigned the entire inventory/stocking process.
- Eye Center – the need to “unchart” EMR before entry of patient data has been reworked with the assistance of IT. This was a drastically needed improvement.
In August of 2013, 5 highly qualified volunteers from EMMC spent a week in Memphis, Tennessee at LifeWings headquarters immersing themselves in the Train-The-Trainer (T3) program. Just a month later, these T3’s began conducting TSW classes for ICU/CCU staff. To date, the T3’s have conducted 16 classes and completed training for all ICU/CCU personnel.
Jen Modery, a Cath Lab Technologist, T3 and leader of the newly formed ToolOwner’s Liaison Support (TLC) group, said this in a message to the PACU HST participants and leadership present for the HST Out briefing: “… I am a firm believer in the process, and have seen proof in the great things we have already been able to accomplish. I know that this new round of “tools” can have some real positive impact as well. The” LifeWings spark” at EMMC is turning into flames and I am so proud to say that I am part of it.”
The Joint Commission (TJC) conducted a no-notice visit to EMMC during the first few days of November 2013, and gave excellent marks to the hospital while singling out their OR timeout process for special praise. CEO Debbie Johnson recognized the work of LifeWings at EMMC with her follow-up remarks to staff. She said in part: “I’d like to thank the many well-informed, highly competent staff members, physicians and leaders who took the time this week to speak with the surveyors from the Joint Commission. The surveyors found a lot to be very impressed about, starting with the engagement and teamwork our staff exhibited. They said staff members they spoke with were confident and knowledgeable and comfortable in their conversations. Vigrx They were very impressed with our safety measures, including the excellent time out process in our OR’s, for example. This process has been revamped and reinvigorated by the staff in this area, with the leadership of Hardwired Safety Tool Teams trained by LifeWings.” EMMC will be continuing their commitment to patient safety excellence when the Emergency Department (ED) begins LifeWings training in February of 2014.

Just over a year ago, in the immediate wake of National Security Advisor Susan Rice's announcement that she was withdrawing her name as a potential candidate to replace Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, NBC News Chief White House Correspondent Chuck Todd declared that Rice had been a "victim" of conservative "advocacy media." The term, one that more media outlets should adopt, is especially descriptive. It is a phrase that applies aptly to the home of Todd's daily news program, MSNBC. There, an interesting phenomenon has been developing over the last month: Several of the network's hosts offering undiluted support for the rise of a progressive insurgency within the Democratic Party for whom even President. Vigrx Barack Obama is too much of a pragmatic centrist.
This phenomenon has been the subject of a handful of recent columns in which I ask how MSNBC's hosts, who so accurately critique the tea party for having pushed the GOP to the right of the American electorate, can fail to recognize the same curious movement forming within their own ranks. But this blind spot has never been so unmistakably exposed as it was Monday on MSNBC's Now with Alex Wagner.
The Now panel spent the first segment predictably dissecting the public feud between "establishment" and insurgent conservative forces within the Republican Party. Vigrx Plus But without a hint of self-awareness, the panel pivoted just two segments later to championing and fostering the development of a progressive version of tea party:
"It's going to take a long time for the Republicans," observed Slate Group editor-in-chief Jacob Weisberg in a discussion about internal GOP feuding over a recent bipartisan budget deal. "But I think some forces of reasonableness and moderation are beginning to reassert themselves."
Wagner wondered if the GOP could convince the factions within the party to support anything "reasonable," given how the Republican Party has nursed the impression among conservatives that compromise with Democrats is tantamount to surrender.
Daily Beast columnist Michael Tomasky agreed and added that the idea that there is that sort of vibrancy within the GOP is not supported by facts. He said that Democrats, not Republicans, are having the real substantive conversation about their philosophical approach to tackling the nation's problems - more on that later.
Finally, New York Magazine contributing writer and author Robert Draper observed that, regardless of the substance of the intra-party conversation today, the GOP will have to adapt their views and policy approaches in order to appeal to more voters. "They're still doing this tightrope - this balancing act between trying to appease this very loud, very activist base," he said, "and trying to grow their electoral base, which has clearly been diminishing."
There is little here to dispute. All of the above could and should be considered sound political analysis. But in a segment just one programming block later, the panel guests cast off their analyst hats in a synchronized display and don their activist chapeaus in a segment championing the rise of an insurgent progressive movement within the Democratic Party:
"Sustaining progressive priorities will be challenging," Wagner warns after reading tea leaves regarding the White House's staffing decisions, arriving at the conclusion that Obama intends to myopically focus on "income inequality" and environmental reforms in his second term.
Wagner echoed New York City Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio who recently predicted a wave of progressivism sweeping the nation, saying that "powerhouses" like Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Federal Reserve Chair nominee Janet Yellen signal that the left is ascending in America.
Unsurprisingly, her guests agreed and offered nothing in the way of a counter-narrative focusing on the political land-mines that will impede the progress for those intrepid revolutionaries on The Long March. The MSNBC panel spent much of their time consumed with the policy hurdles that frustrate liberal lawmakers, but no time was devoted to understanding, or even asking, if the American electorate will reward a Democratic Party that sidelines its moderate voices.
Last week, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) took a step that would have been unthinkable just weeks ago, let alone just after the conservative wave election of 2010: He scolded conservative outside groups for misleading their followers and pushing GOP lawmakers to balk at legislative compromise.
It is not difficult to envision a scenario in which MSNBC, after a few election cycles in which Democrats sacrifice a few winnable seats on the altar of progressive purity, is the target of terse rebuke from the Democratic leaders.
